THE REALIZATION THAT WE BELONG TO THE LORD AND HAVE A MISSION TO BE CARRIED OUT IN BOLDNESS DOES NOT STOP WITH THE TWELVE

THE REALIZATION THAT WE BELONG TO THE LORD AND HAVE A MISSION TO BE CARRIED OUT IN BOLDNESS DOES NOT STOP WITH THE TWELVE

(A biblical reflection on THE 15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME [YEAR B] – 11 July 2021)

Gospel Reading: Mark 6:7-13

First Reading: Amos 7:12-15; Psalms: Psalm 85:9-14; Second Reading: Ephesians 1:3-14

The Scripture Text

And He called to Him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. And He said to them, “Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them.” So they went out and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them. (Mark 6:7-13 RSV)

It is a simple fact that being a faithful Christian often means that we find ourselves not belonging or fitting in. The words from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians (Second Reading) remind us that to be a Christian is to belong to God. We belong to the Lord Jesus, who gives our life its meaning and truth. We cannot give our allegiance to two masters. We cannot ultimately belong to the world and still claim to be a disciple. We must choose.

The most practical expression of trusting and belonging to the Lord is contained in today’s Gospel reading. The twelve are sent on a mission to confront the forces of evil and proclaim the Good News. Since they belong to Jesus, they need not go forth in fear. They will depend on divine providence and the love of others to support their work. Worldly provisions are not to be taken. The disciples must be bold and trusting in word and deed. Their mission will require of them great boldness and confidence in God. At time, this will not allow them to stay with their hosts. Yet they must be faithful.

The realization that we belong to the Lord and have a mission to be carried out in boldness does not stop with the Twelve. It is for us as well. Through our baptism we are called to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom. We are prayerfully proclaim God’s word in season and out, whether it is accepted or rejected. We must live the words we speak. Our inspired boldness gives our mission authenticity and invites others to follow Jesus.

Boldness and belonging to the Lord, however, are not meant to evoke arrogance or pride. What is called for is humility and a deep sense of being unworthy. As beautifully expressed by the theologian Father Karl Rahner, S.J., “God must always proceed afresh from our sense of mission, from a background of prayerful silence.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, we pray that You will continue to call Your disciples/followers of today to preach the Gospel. We also pray for those whom You call, that they will respond wholeheartedly because they belong to You, Lord. We thank You, Jesus, for letting each and every one of us to share in some way in the works of Your mission. Amen.
