SAINT IGNATIUS OF ANTIOCH, Bishop and Martyr – Memoria: 17 October

Ignatius became the second bishop of Antioch after Saint Peter. He was sentenced to death by being thrown to wild beasts and for this purpose he was sent to Rome and in the year 107 under the Emperor Trajan suffered a glorious martyrdom. On the journey to Rome he wrote seven letters to the various churches in which he dealt wisely and deeply with the theology of Christ, the constitution of the Church and the Christian life. He has been venerated at Antioch on this date since the time of the fourth century.

Prayer: Almighty, ever-living God, the sufferings of the martyrs adorn the Church, which is the Body of Christ. As we celebrate the martyrdom of Saint Ignatius of Antioch, grant that it may be for us a constant source of strength as it was for him the entry into the heavenly glory. We pray this in the most precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
