For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you them. (John 13:15-17 RSV)
Jesus’ challenge to His disciples was not about the superficiality of washing feet. It was the call to serve others with a Christ-like attitude. Jesus was setting up His followers for God’s heart for ministry: seeking the benefit of others – an instruction and challenge for believers throughout all generations.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You humbled Yourself for all Your first disciples by washing their feet. By Your Holy Spirit give us – Your modern-age disciples – the willingness and ability to do the same to others with pure loving hearts. Amen.
