I AM THE WAY, AND THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME.”

Today’s Gospel Reading: John 14:1-6 – 4th WEEK OF EASTER: Friday, 17 May 2019

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6). How often have you heard this passage from John and focused on the thought that Jesus is the only one who can get us into heaven? But have you ever hear this passage and thought about prayer? It’s in prayer that we come to experience Jesus as the way we should follow, the truth that soothes out soul, and the life that satisfies our every desire.  It’s in prayer that we can enter into conversation with Jesus and see in Him the image of the invisible God (Hebrews 1:3). And that’s how religion becomes no longer a blind search for God but a response of faith and love to a God who has revealed Himself.

The secret of prayer is revealed beside the well where we come seeking a drink (see the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman; John 4:1-39). As we came to the well seeking water, we find that Jesus is already there, even more thirsty for us than we are for Him! Remember: It was He who first sought us out by becoming man.

As the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus never runs out of grace for us. Opening our hearts in prayer is like coming across a diamond mine filled with treasures – peace, joy, confidence, and healing. It’s like finding ourselves as a banquet table filled with a measureless supply of fine food and drink.

God has no need of our fellowship. Our prayer adds nothing to His glory. Rather, it’s in prayer that we experience over and over again His way of self-emptying. He is constantly giving of Himself for us, constantly offering us more and more of His life and love.

In prayer, we are invited to bring our finite understanding to God and ask Him to raise it up and fill it with His heavenly, infinite wisdom. We are invited to bring our sins to God and as Him to fill us with His mercy and strength. We are invited to bring our fears and anxieties to God and let Him fill us with His courage and peace. How eager the Father is to give us the Kingdom!
