THIS IS THE WORK OF GOD, THAT YOU BELIEVE IN THE ONE HE SENT

Today’s Gospel Reading: John 6:22-29 – 3rd WEEK OF EASTER: Monday, 6 May 2019

In contrast with our daily bread for breakfast which can fill us just for a short amount of time, Jesus offers us a kind of bread that will satisfy forever (John 6:27).

This bread – eternal life – is a free gift from God, but at the same time, Jesus says we should work for this food. How can this be? The work to which Jesus calls us, fundamentally, is believing in Him, but this kind of believing is not the same as idleness. Rather, belief in Jesus naturally leads us to action, to the “work” of living out our faith in the world.

It seems to be a spiritual principle that as we work out of our faith in Christ, the faith that we have only grows and flourishes. God once told Saint Catherine of Siena, “I have willed that one should need another and that all should be my ministers in distributing the graces and gifts they have received from me.” By serving other people, we ourselves are blessed – often far beyond our expectations – because this is how God wanted us to be bound to one another in love.

Caring for the sick, feeding and clothing the poor, and serving our families all require that we pay a price in terms of our time, money, and emotional energy. But again, it’s when we arrive at the limits of our human capacities that we become open to heavenly intervention. Grace, miracles, wisdom, and perseverance can flow as we learn to rely not on our own resources, but on our heavenly Father instead. His love will comfort and sustain us, and the memory of his work in our lives can become the basis for our trust in the future.
