Today’s Gospel Reading: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 – 2nd WEEK OF LENT: Saturday, 23 March 2019
The parable of the prodigal son is really the story of the forgiving father. Jesus told the incident to show us how God feels about those of us who know we are sinners, but want to return to God. He loves us and wants to celebrate that happy return with us.
The parable says, “No matter how you think you have failed, your heavenly Father will receive you back with love, and He invites you to that new life in Him.
That is the invitation and the challenge which Jesus is holding out to each one of us. God’s unfailing and unquestionable love for each of us comes through us in the parable.
We should note the role of the son in the story. The father could not have forgiven the son, if the son had not returned to this father to receive it. The son was open and ready for forgiveness, because he was honest enough to see himself as he really was. He saw that his life was empty, that he had thrown away his real blessings for false ones, and that he would be infinitely better off returning to his father.
