Today’s Gospel Reading: Mark 7:31-37 – 5th ORDINARY WEEK: 15 February 2019
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying: “He has done all things well; He even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak” (Mark 7:37).
Let us apply these closing words of today’s Gospel to ourselves. We would be spiritually deaf and mute except for Christ. Think of what the world would be like today without Christ, without our Christian faith, without Christian influence in the world. Think what it would be like without the sacraments, without Holy Mass, without the graces of Christ.
But thanks be to God, Christ, Son of God, has come, has redeemed us, and brought us into a brotherhood under the Father. He has set us on the road of truth under the guidance of the Church. We are no longer deaf and mute. We hear the voice of God in the Holy Word and we can answer. We are given the faith through the sacraments. We listen to God and believe. We open our mouths and use our voices in praise of God, not only in words but also by living the commandments.
We must always be interested in listening when Christ speaks to us through His Church. We should also be willing to speak for Christ when the occasion arises. If God or Christ is attacked, speak out. We have God on our side and have no reason to be afraid to face up to those who oppose us in maatters of Christian faith and conduct. We are not deaf or mute.
