Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 7:21,24-27 – FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT: Thursday, 6 December 2018
Anyone who hears the Lord’s words and puts them into action is building on rock. We strengthen our faith by practicing it. Theory or emotion is fugitive. When we start to live our our faith, it slowly becomes a deeper and more insistent part of us.
What is true of any field of study is true of our spiritual life. Practice roots and anchors theory. Spiritual maturity is not conceptual but practical.
In Advent, we prepare not only for Christmas day but for something more lasting. We try to capture the Christmas spirit to make it our own. This has less to do with the atmospherics of the season than with the fellowship we share. If we ground our Christmas celebration on our experience of the Lord Jesus, then it will have effects that pour into every phase of our life.
Christmas is more than a seasonal ambience. It is a way of life. Putting the significance of Christmas into regular practice is like building on rock – it lasts!
