Today’s Gospel Reading: Luke 9:18-22 – TWENTY-FIFTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Friday, 28 September 2018
Jesus is about to begin His journey to Jerusalem. On the way, He stops and asks whether anybody has understood anything He has said and done thus far. “Who do you say that I am?”
Peter responds that Jesus is the Messiah, the fulfillment fo Old Testament hopes. He had been picking up all the small signals Jesus had been sending out.
Jesus knew, as well, about those dreams of Messianic glory and kingship that were sizzling in the disciples’ minds. For that reason, He began to tell them that He must suffer and die and only then be raised up. Jesus explained to them and to Peter the fuller meaning of Peter’s own words. The Messiah would have spiritual, not political glory.
