YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN

Today’s Gospel Reading: Luke 7:36-50 – TWENTY-FOURTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Thursday, 20 September 2018

The woman who washes the feet of Jesus with her tears and anoints them with the ointment realizes not only her own sinfulness but also comes to experience the Lord’s forgiveness. That combination creates saints and powerful apostles.

A recognition of sin alone leads to spiritual pessimism. A recognition of God’s willingness to forgive, by itself, can lead to cheap grace and automatic religion. When the cross-hairs of repentance and forgiveness meet in our soul, saints are born.

The experience of forgiven sin is the founding experience of the Christian life.
