Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:27-32 – TENTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Friday, 15 June 2018
Jesus reminds us that although adultery can destroy a marriage, lust in heart or mind of a person can be just as devastating to a relationship. To preserve fidelity to a spouse or to God is not just a matter of what we do with our bodies. It also concerns what we do with our minds, feelings and hearts.
Just as God was present in the simple words of the prophet Elijah (see First Reading: 1Kings 19:9,11-16), so the power to create, preserve or destroy a relationship is lodged inside ourselves. The spiritual bond of marriage can be destroyed in other ways than adultery. Infidelity begin in the mind.
The great deeds of good and evil that find their way into history books are the end products of what takes place in the human mind and heart.
