Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:20-26 – TENTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Thursday, 14 June 2018

Jesus tells us that holiness is not simply compliance with a legal code but personal transformation. He fleshes this out through a set of six examples to show that the Law of Moses did not go far enough toward internal change.

It is important not simply to avoid murder but to evict from within us the brooding anger that makes us want to commit murder. Our spiritual life is not hermetically sealed from our emotional life. The understanding of an individual harboring a grudge at this very moment, for example, would be veiled as they hear this very Gospel reading. Our anger and jealousy, however deeply we think we may have buried them within us, cloud our comprehension of the Gospel message and block the action of God’s Spirit. On the other hand, our aggressive search for reconciliation can uncover new levels of meaning in the Gospel message.

Reconciliation with others releases our spiritual vitality.
