Today’s Gospel Reading: Mark 12:13-17 – NINTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Tuesday, 5 June 2018

Jesus speaks to the Pharisees and Herodians about the volatile subject of taxes. To give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar is not an admonition to isolate our political and civic life from our faith. Our Christian faith should permeate everything we do, including our lives as citizens.

Because Christian viewpoints should not be absent from public policy discussions, it is no surprise that believers are involved in a variety of public issues, most notably those of abortion and the use of nuclear weaponry. The Lord is reminding the Pharisees and the Herodians (and all of us) that we do have civil obligations. We must perform them with the same care that we give to our religious duties.

How and what we give to Caesar is a religious matter.
