Today’s Gospel Reading: Mark 12:1-12 – NINTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Monday, 4 June 2018
Many writers feel that this is the central parable of Mark’s Gospel. It summarizes the basic conflict that underlies his entire Gospel story and the meaning of the ministry of Jesus.
The vicious tenants refused to give their produce to the owner. The spiritual leaders of Jerusalem killed the various agents and prophets who had been sent to remind them of their position as tenants and not owners. Finally, they killed the Owner’s Son as well, effectively rejecting the Owner. Yet, that act of savagery would become the start of a new vineyard, a new structure, a new covenant and a new people of God.
