THE CURSE OF THE FIG TREE & THE CLEANSING OF THE TEMPLE

01 Jun

Today’s Gospel Reading: Mark 11:11-26 – EIGHTH WEEK OF THE YEAR: Friday, 1 June 2018

The lectionary has omitted the Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. This reading takes us directly to the final period of Jesus’ life as He walks freely about the city and countryside.

The curse of the fig tree is a prophetic action of Jesus. The tree is a symbol of the way religion had been politicized and trivialized over the years. The cleansing of the Temple is a second prophetic action. The rage of Jesus is directed past this small group of religious entrepreneurs toward the overall displacement of the fundamental purpose of the Law and covenant by secondary concerns and regulations.

As the fig tree withered, so would this religious establishment die; as the Temple was cleansed, so would a renewed and reinvigorated people of God be born from the blood of the cross.

Difficulties can cause us to rearrange our lives in an Easter rebirth.
