Today’s Gospel Reading: John 6:1-15 -SECOND WEEK OF EASTER: Friday, 13 April 2018

John’s recounting of the multiplication of the loaves is, as always, a symbol of the Eucharist. From these few loaves many were fed and made into a community, at least for a while.

We are all faced with the problems of universalism in our own parishes and lives. We have to balance local needs with larger concerns. It would be scandalous to become so preoccupied with our own problems that we forget the larger world and it needs. The Apostles could have stayed in Jerusalem. Alternatively, we can become so preoccupied with other people’s needs that we forget the serious problems we have within our own households. Everyone must strike a balance. The celebration of the Eucharist, symbolized in the Gospel, reminds us that there is in fact a balance to be struck between our personal world and the much larger world of mankind.

The Eucharist reminds us that we are part of the larger Body of Christ.
