Today’s First Reading: Acts 4:13-21 – EASTER SATURDAY: 7 April 2018
In this scene of Peter and John before the Jewish court, Luke is anxious to show that the early Church had not been engaged in anything illegal. It shows, as well, a gradual shift in leadership among the people from the official leaders of Judaism to the Christian Apostles. It highlights as well the new boldness with which the Apostles spoke.
We can compare the hesitation, intramural quarreling and uncomprehending attitudes of these same men in Luke’s Gospel. Pentecost had changed them. The same should be true of ourselves. We can draw spiritual confidence from the Spirit of the Risen Lord within us. People are often afraid to trust that Spirit. We should certainly read, consult and pray before important decisions of our life. Having done that, we should rely on the gift of the baptismal Spirit we have all received.
We should never doubt the presence of the Risen Lord among us.
