Laurence was a deacon of the Church of Rome and died in the same persecution of Valerian four days after Pope Saint Sixtus Ii and his four fellow-deacons. He was buried on the Via Tiburtina at the Campo Verano near to where Constantine the Great built a basilica. He has been venerated throughout the Church from the fourth century.

Prayer: Lord God, You inspired Saint Laurence with so ardent a love, that his life was renowned for the service of Your people and his death for the the splendor of his martyrdom. Help us to love what he loved and to live as he showed us. We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ,Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
